The 3rd House

3rd House

Your 3rd House covers the following areas:

  • all exchanges of information (conversations and writing, incoming and outgoing)

  • gossip

  • meetings

  • contracts

  • how you classify various things

  • your neighbours and siblings

  • quick journeys (not major trips)

This house is the key to how you connect with others using information. It's also about how you take in information. A natal emphasis on this house (the South Node and/or personal planets in the 3rd) not only indicates a specific and possibly habitual approach to communication, but there can be a powerful drive to make your thoughts know. Your Moon in this house indicates a need to communicate. Your Sun indicates that ego and purpose are based on communication. Natal Saturn or Chiron suggests difficulties with communication, learning or being insecure about intellect.

Overall, this house is often emphasized in the charts of writers.

If you have siblings, planets in this house, or the condition of the house ruler will say much about your relationship with them. Jupiter can mean a happy relationship, although Jupiter with Saturn can indicate issues of authority and judgement. Same deal with neighbours, which is not a topic that people often connect to this house. As an experiment, think about the types of neighbours you end up with and the types of relationships you have with them- is that energy echoed by your 3rd?

The ruler of this house (the planetary ruler of the sign on the cusp) will tell you more about how this house functions, according to its sign and house position.

The 3rd House is associated with the sign Gemini, no matter what sign your 3rd House cusp is in. Gemini is the third sign of the zodiac and this is the energy in your chart that takes the initiation of the 1st and the security of the 2nd House and goes further with them. You're branching out and learning more.  But to avoid confusion, don't worry about where Gemini is in your chart (unless of course it's in your 3rd House). The association is just to give you an idea of the 3rd House's primary energy.

If you want:

Favourable Contracts: look for transits from Jupiter into your 3rd (as long as there are not hard aspects to Neptune which can result in inaccuracies or deception). Saturn is good for a  formal contract that will stick, but it can also be very restrictive. Pluto can be helpful for contracts that increase your power and influence, but be very careful with this energy - Pluto can also result in all-or-nothing deals or unbalanced agreements.

Attention for your Words: again, transiting Jupiter is good as is Pluto, in your 3rd. But Pluto also presents the risk of people reacting far more strongly to what you say or write. Maybe that's what you want, but Pluto can trigger their subconscious issues. Use with care. Transiting Mars will definitely grab attention but can trigger anger or challenges from others.

To Mend Relationships with Siblings (or Neighbours): transits from Neptune in the 3rd increase compassion and release, but can also encourage deceit (if that's a risk). Jupiter increases good will, and Venus is always nice for happy conversations (but not necessarily deep healing-Venus can be superficial).

Of course, all of the above depends on the existing condition of your 3rd. If you have natal Saturn in the 3rd, you can still see good results but you'll have to deal with existing limits, rules and fears around what you are allowed to say or how you communicate. Natal Uranus in your 3rd suggests that any developments will have a touch of the unexpected - contracts/relationships can suddenly change or rupture, surprising truths can emerge even when you're not looking for this. Short trips can occur or be interrupted without notice.
