The Shadow Side In The Signs: Capricorn and Aquarius

Every sign is capable of exhibiting self-destructive traits. Generally, they are exaggerated versions of the signs' attributes that result in the opposite of their primary goals. 

In the following analyses I won't look at the "why" just the "how." Note that these are very general descriptions and are not meant to be in-depth analyses of individuals.

CAPRICORN

Goals: To be the boss, To be in control, To be successful

The ambitious drive can be distorted into a fixation on status. As an Earth sign ruled by disciplinary Saturn, the work ethic is strong as is the power to manifest visible success. But when this is all that matters, empathy, trust and truly intimate relationships can be denied. Emotional connections are blocked in an attempt to maintain personal security and focus on "what matters". There can also be deep-seated fears of failure and losing control. In an attempt to compensate, focus on the goal at the top of the ladder/mountain becomes all-consuming. But when that goal is achieved, isolation can be the result. 

Therefore, the satisfaction of success is denied because there is a sneaking suspicion that what has been achieved is hollow. The key is to confront limiting fears and rigid adherence to certain traditions. And, consider the difference between independence versus isolation. 

AQUARIUS

Goals: To be liberated, To interact with the future, To detach

Uniqueness and living on the cutting edge can be distorted into bitter rejection of the group. This sign has a talent for standing back from everyone and viewing things from a unique and clarifying angle. But if that view is distorted, people are lumped together as a flock of simpering, judgmental, stupid sheep. The danger with extreme detachment is a complete lack of connection with anyone. The suspicion that everyone judges them and views them as a weirdo is confirmed when people sense their vibe of anger or apathy. 

Sometimes Aquarius's uniqueness is brandished as a weapon- individuation is confrontational and is used for shock value. In the process, they sacrifice true detachment because they're angry at being on the outside. Or, they're angry with/disgusted at humanity and just give up on being part of the human race. And this is the furthest thing from detachment. Also, complete denial of the past and fixation on what's next can blind them to the bigger picture. It is important for this sign to remember that true detachmentIs not based in anger or disgust. And, it is possible to connect with others without sacrificing that clear view or individuation.
