The 7th House

7th House

Your 7th House covers the following areas:

  • all one-on-one relationships (romantic, business, close friendships, competitors)

  • the "other"

This is most commonly known as the house of marriage, but the 7th is about so much more than that. This house covers all one-on-one connections. Traditionally it's considered to be the house of open enemies, but I prefer to use the word "competitors." If you think about it, your connection with competitors can be very similar to a romantic partner (sometimes they are one and the same).

This is also the house of projection. If you're not fully aware of your 7th House, you will end up projecting that energy onto others. They will manifest the energies of the sign ruling the cusp of your 7th, plus any planets/asteroids in this house. These are the qualities you admire in others, the qualities you're attracted to in a partner and the qualities in your competitor/nemesis that frustrate or enrage you.

They're all your projected qualities: the 7th is opposite from the 1st, which is the house of your identity. The others that you're attracted to (or compete with) are reflections of you.

Let's say your DC (cusp of your 7th) is in Saturn-ruled Capricorn. You may project authority and responsibility onto your partners, looking for someone who echoes your father (represented by Saturn) or who provides limits/restrictions. Perhaps your partners are controlling, disciplined or older than you. If this energy pops up in those who challenge you, you may have troubles with authority.

The key is owning your Saturn - taking responsibility, learning how to express your authority, becoming your own parent. If need be, sorting out your Father issues. The more aware you are of your 7th House qualities, the more likely you are to attract healthy versions (partners who are responsible and committed rather than ultra-controlling and judgemental). This also means acknowledging your projected control issues - you are probably indirectly controlling. Meaning, at first you may appear to be a compliant or immature partner. But once the relationship gains momentum your rigid tendencies will sneak out .

People with one or more personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) in the 7th will be very focused on having a partner. A 7th House Sun can mean that your ego depends on being in a relationship. A 7th House Mars suggests you allow "them" to be the motivator and you may have difficulties taking action.  But with full awareness, 7th House personal planets can be used to build powerful partnerships in your work and personal life. You will have a natural affinity for relating.

If you're in doubt about what and if you're projecting, think about the key qualities that you admire in others. And the key qualities that you're continually confronted with in others. Chances are these are your projected energies - how can you own them?

If someone's personal planets fall in your 7th (especially if they fall within 3 deg of your DC) they will activate your partnership energy. You'll probably be quite drawn to them, although in some cases (depending on what planets are involved) it can be an attraction/repulsion scenario where they challenge and anger you (competitor). Maybe they express what you wish you had. Hint: if they activate your 7th House they are expressing what you actually have.

I often get questions from clients who have their North Node (path forward) in their 7th. Their path is supposed to involve being in a relationship, so why do they have so much trouble with this area?  The North Node is unfamiliar territory, which means balanced, one-on-one connections are difficult. A 7th House NN means you have to learn how to relate to another in an equal way.

If you want to:

Meet Someone Who Can Have A Healthy, Committed Relationship With You

Transiting Jupiter through your 7th will bring someone different from your usual type, and there will probably be a sense of optimism. Transiting Saturn is all about commitment, but the relationship can be quite heavy (more responsibilities than you bargained for). Transiting Pluto can bring the life-changing union, but (depending on the aspects to other planets in your chart) can also trigger obsession. Your progressed Moon into your 7th often signals a time when you're ready to attract someone (you're emotionally ready).

But in order for any of the above to work in your favour, you need to deal with your 7th House issues first.

Liberate Yourself From Old Relationship Patterns

Transiting Uranus will shake things up, often in the form of a partner who is very unconventional. You will be exposed to relationship dynamics that didn't think were possible, but Uranus is also very unstable. Transiting Neptune can dissolve boundaries, but this influence often brings deception and illusion.

When your Progressed DC changes signs, it's a rare event that also marks a whole new energy  in your love life (often symbolized by a new type of partner who personifies the sign your DC has entered).

Learn How To Be Happy And Independent On Your Own

Transiting Uranus and Jupiter through the 7th are the freedom transits - a chance to explore single life in a new way. Transiting Saturn sometimes forces you to be single by restricting your options and pushing you to be responsible. It's not usually a happy transit, but can be quite constructive. You'll definitely learn how to be independent.

All of the above transits can also apply if the planet is conjoining the natal ruler of your 7th House.
